gal: uredinia vooral onderzijdig, geel, 0,5 mm, met knotsvormige paraphysen; ; urediniosporen elliptisch, zeer grof bestekeld. Telia eveneens onderzijdig, subepidermaal, donkerbruin.
gall: uredinia mostly hypophyllous, 0.5 mm, yellow, with clublike paraphyses; ; urediniospores elliptic, very coarsely spinulose. Telia also hypophyllous, subepidermal, dark brown.

synoniemen Melampsora aecioides, castellana, laricis-tremulae, magnusiana, pinitorqua, pulcherrima, rostrupii, vormen een complex van soorten, dat als geheel wordt benoemd als M. populnea. Ze vormen morfologisch sterk overeenkomende urdinia en telia op Popuus sectie Leuce (alba, x canescens, tremula), maar aecia op zeer uiteenlopende plantensoorten. Over de taxonomische status van de afzonderlijke soorten van het complex bestaat geen eenstemmigheid.
De interpretatie van M. laricis Hartig, 1885 is niet geneel duidelijk. Volgens Brandenburger en de Index Fungorum (2017) is het een synoniem van populnea, maar Klenke & Scholler verwijzen naar M. caprearum
synonyms Melampsora aecioides, castellana, laricis-tremulae, magnusiana, pinitorqua, pulcherrima, rostrupii, form a complex of species, that collectively is addressed under the name M. populnea. They form strongly resembling uredinia and telia on Popuus sectie Leuce (alba, x canescens, tremula), but aecia on widely divergent plant species. There is no consensus about the taxonomic status of the component species.
The interpretation of M. laricis Hartig, 1885 is not fully clear. According to Brandenburger and the Index Fungorum (2017)it is a junior synonym of populnea, but Klenke & Scholler point to M. caprearum
