De levenswijze van zweefvlieglarven loopt zeer sterk uiteen (Rotheray, 1993a); zowel carnivore, detritusetende als plantenetende typen komen voort. Twee Cheilosia-soorten mineren; de andere soorten van dit grote geslacht boren in de stengels of wortels, of leven in paddestoelen (Stuke, 2000a).

Hoverfly larvae have all sorts of biologies (Rotheray, 1993a); carnivorous, detritiphagous and phytophagous types occur. Two Cheilosia species live as miners; the other species of this large genus bore in stems or roots, or live in fungi (Stuke, 2000a).
