Deze familie telt in Europa maar één soort, Blasticotoma filiceti, die mineert bij wijfjesvaren. De larve leeft in een holte in de bladsteel, en voedt zich met toestromend celsap, analoog aan de levenswijze van Cystiphora-larven. In beide gevallen wijkt dit zo af van wat bij mineerders gebruikelijk is dat het misschien juister is om deze dieren als galvormers te beschouwen.
In Europe this family consists of but one species, Blasticotoma filiceti, a miner of Lady's-fern. The larva lives in a cavity in the petiole, drinking the sap that streams in from the surrounding tissue, analogous to the biology of Cystiphora-larvae. In both cases this is such an exceptional behaviour that it is a moot point if these species should rather be placed among the gall makers.
