Upper-surface, fairly wide, branching corridor without apparent feeding lines. At least in Erigeron older mines turn reddish=brown. Frass in isolated grains and pearl chains. Pupation outside the mine.

Aster amellus, novi-belgii; Erigeron acris, annuus, canadensis; ? Hieracium, Symphyotrichum novi-belgii.

May perhaps also occur on Tripolium pannonicum subsp. tripolium; see the note below.

larva

Described by de Meijere (1928a as erigerophila, 1937a as asteribia) and by Griffiths (1976c); achterspiraculum with 8-11 papillae.

notes

De Meijere (1924a) described a new species, Ph. tripolii, bred from Aster tripolium. The mine was not described, and the description of the fly is too incomplete for recognition (Griffiths, 1976c). De Meijere described the larva in 1926a. Ten years later (1937a), while describing the larva of Ph. asteribia he noted a strong resemblance with the one of tripolii. There is therefore a possibility that tripolii and asteribia/erigerophila refer to the same species. However, the type of tripolii is lost (de Jong, 2000a), and the name of tripolii must be put aside as unresolvable.
